National Geographic Traveller magazine – ‘The Gambia’.
The Gambia River has given the country it flows through far more than just a name. In this small, riparian nation on Africa’s west, life revolves around the river’s gently winding course as it makes its way out to sea: traders sail between historic riverside towns; fishermen cast nets from narrow pirogues; and women harvest oysters in the brackish tributaries. Wildlife, too, thrives in these waters, from hippos wallowing in the depths to western red colobus monkeys keeping watch from tentacled mangroves… Words and images by Jason Florio – National Geographic Traveller magazine, UK edition, Jan/Feb 2022
